KNX security and access control

The strongest thing you can give a building is awareness of itself — a sense of every door, window, movement and presence, and the judgement to act on it. That is what KNX security and KNX access control provide: every contact and sensor reporting onto one open bus, so access, alarm, intercom and the rest of your smart home behave as a single system instead of a shelf of separate boxes that never talk. We design and commission this across Europe on the open KNX standard, and hand it over properly tested.

One honest point about scope up front: KNX is the intelligence and the glue, not a substitute for certified alarm hardware. For graded intrusion protection we bring in a dedicated, standards-compliant alarm panel and report its state onto KNX — so you get proper certified alarming and whole-building smart logic, rather than a compromise on either.

A house that looks lived-in while you’re away

An empty-looking building invites trouble; one that looks occupied does not. KNX presence simulation replays believable patterns of lighting and shading while you are gone — lamps coming and going in different rooms, blinds rising and falling on a natural rhythm — drawn from how you actually use the house rather than an obvious on-the-hour timer. A single “Away” command sets it off, or geofencing does it for you the moment you leave the area. It is one of the cheapest and most effective deterrents there is, and it reuses the lighting and shading you already have.

Deciding who gets in, and when

Access control governs the front line. We integrate keypads, RFID and transponder readers, fingerprint units and motorised locks, with KNX driving the door strikes, gates and barriers and logging every event onto the bus. The clever part is that entry can trigger a whole chain: unlocking the front door can disarm the alarm, switch on the hall light, ease the house into a welcome climate setting and lift the right blinds — all from one authenticated tap. In a shared or multi-tenant property, different credentials carry different rights and time windows, and every event is visible on the visualisation.

  • Readers and keypads — RFID, PIN code and fingerprint entry.
  • Gates and barriers — driveway and garage access driven from KNX.
  • A clear event log — who opened what, and when, recorded on the bus.

Certified alarm hardware, smarter response

For real intrusion protection we integrate a dedicated alarm panel and bring its status onto KNX. So an alarm condition can set off a full building response — every light to 100%, blinds up, a clear lit path to the door, the event pushed straight to your phone — while the alarm itself stays a certified, graded device doing what it is certified to do. Arming and disarming can ride along with access control and your “Away” scenes, so the building secures itself behind you and greets you on the way back, no juggling three separate apps.

The sensors that protect you are the ones that already save you energy

There is a neat overlap here. Window and door contacts report open or closed for both security and heating logic; motion detectors feed presence control by day and after-hours alerting by night. And KNX brings the safety sensors into the same fold — smoke, water-leak and gas detectors — so a leak under the sink or smoke in a corridor sets off an immediate, building-wide reaction. A water-leak event can close a motorised valve, alert you and log the incident, turning what would have been a flood into a notification on your phone.

Seeing and answering the door from anywhere

KNX links to IP intercom and door-station systems, so a call at the gate can be answered from a touch panel or your phone, and one action can let someone in, disarm and light their way. IP cameras fold into the visualisation for live and event-triggered views. And through our remote support setup you keep secure awareness of the building’s state — armed or disarmed, doors open or shut — wherever you happen to be.

How we deliver your security project

  • Design — detector and reader layout, alarm and intercom integration plan, built in ETS.
  • Programming — access logic, presence simulation, alarm-linked scenes and alerts.
  • Commissioning — every contact, reader and panel verified on site by our European teams.
  • Handover — documented, explained and ready to live with, with support afterward.

For owners and developers it arrives finished and tested. For integrators and architects, you get the catalogue range and the ETS templates to specify access, alarm and intercom integration cleanly, with our teams handling the on-site work.

Common questions about KNX security and access

Does KNX replace a certified burglar alarm?

No — and it shouldn’t try to. For graded intrusion protection we integrate a certified alarm panel and report its state onto KNX, so you get compliant alarming plus a whole-building smart response. Think of KNX as the intelligence wrapped around the alarm, not a stand-in for it.

How convincing is the presence simulation really?

It plays back your home’s own recorded lighting and shading patterns rather than a fixed timer, so the lived-in look shifts naturally from room to room. It can start automatically on “Away” or by geofencing as you leave the area.

Can unlocking the door also disarm the alarm and set the scene?

Yes. A single authenticated entry can disarm the alarm, switch on lights, set a welcome climate and raise the right blinds — all linked, so coming home is one smooth action rather than five separate ones.
