KNX lighting control

Think about the last time you walked into your kitchen with your hands full and fumbled for the right switch among five identical ones. Or the evening you wanted soft light to read by and got floodlit instead. Good KNX lighting control quietly erases those small daily frictions — the light is simply right, the moment you need it, without you thinking about it. That is what we build at SmartKNX: lighting that behaves intelligently across a home or a whole commercial floor, all running on one open, manufacturer-independent bus.

Whether you live in the building and just want it to work, or you are an integrator who lives in ETS and wants a partner who delivers clean projects, this page lays out exactly how we approach lighting — what it gives you, and where the real value sits.

From dumb switches to a system that thinks

The fundamental shift is this: instead of a switch being hard-wired to a single circuit, every command travels on the bus. A wall button, a motion sensor, a touch panel, a schedule, your phone — they all send a message, and the right actuator responds. Nothing is locked in copper anymore, so you can change how a room behaves later without an electrician pulling cable through your walls.

  • Clean switching with proper status feedback, so a panel never tells you a light is off when it is actually on.
  • Smooth, flicker-free dimming for LED, halogen or older loads, with the soft fade-up that makes a space feel considered rather than clinical.
  • Whole-room moods from a single press — your “dinner” setting, your “film night”, your “leaving the house”.
  • One-touch central control at the door: everything off as you leave, or every light to full if something goes bump in the night.

Scenes that learn your habits

Scenes are where this stops being a gadget and starts being genuinely useful. We program presets that pull together brightness, colour temperature and groupings so a room changes character in an instant. A family living room might get warm evening light, a gentle night path to the bathroom, and a bright welcome when you come home. In an office or hotel we layer in tunable-white profiles that drift cooler through the morning and warmer toward evening, which people feel even if they never notice why. And because every scene lives on the bus, you can hold a button to re-save your own version — your taste evolves, no programmer required.

Light that follows people, not timers

Presence and motion detectors keep light where someone actually is. A decent KNX detector is smarter than a basic PIR: it pairs occupancy with a built-in lux reading, so a corridor only lights up when it is genuinely dim and genuinely occupied. We tune the sensitivity, the hold times and the master/slave groupings so stairwells, bathrooms and store rooms stop burning energy for an empty space. In open-plan offices that same logic gives you automatic, compliant switch-off that nobody has to remember.

Borrowing free light from the sun

Daylight harvesting is, honestly, the biggest energy win in most lighting jobs. A lux sensor reads how much daylight a room already has, and the system trims the artificial light to hold a steady target — say 500 lux on a desk — so you are never over-lighting a room the sun is already filling. As a cloud passes or dusk settles, the output rises again, so smoothly you would struggle to catch it happening. Tie that to presence detection and motorised shading and the savings stack up while the room stays visually consistent all day.

When every fitting needs its own address

For projects where each luminaire has to be controlled individually — retail, architectural schemes, larger offices — we bridge KNX to DALI. A KNX/DALI gateway gives you per-fixture addressing, group and scene control, and the genuinely useful part: lamp-fault and ballast-status feedback reported straight back to the system and up to your dashboard. DALI looks after the fixtures; KNX handles the logic, the sensors, the panels and the way lighting talks to everything else in the building.

How we actually deliver it

We work to a documented process so nothing gets improvised on site:

  • Design — load schedule, group-address structure and detector layout, built in ETS on templates we have refined over many projects.
  • Programming — actuators, dimmers, gateways and scenes configured and parameterised before anyone touches the wall.
  • Commissioning — every circuit, scene and sensor checked on site through our European commissioning teams.
  • Handover — labelled documentation, your ETS file, a short walkthrough, and remote support when you want a tweak later.

If you are an integrator or MEP partner, we are happy to share templates and group-address conventions so a project scales floor to floor without nasty surprises. If you are a homeowner, you genuinely do not need to know any of that — you press a button, the light is right. One small practical advantage worth mentioning: our Letour devices have the relay built in, which often saves you separate actuator modules and leaves the distribution board noticeably tidier.

Common questions about KNX lighting

Can I add KNX lighting to a house that is already finished?

Often, yes. Where running fresh bus cable would mean tearing up walls, we mix in wireless KNX RF devices so you get the automation without the building work. The right balance depends on your walls and ceilings, which is exactly what we check before quoting.

Will the lights still work if the network goes down?

Absolutely. The control lives on the bus itself, so your wall switches and panels keep working whether or not the internet, the router or any server is up. The app is a convenience on top, not a dependency.

Can I change my scenes myself later?

Yes — that is the point. Most scenes can be re-saved from a long press on a button or panel, so you adjust them as your life changes without calling anyone back.
